Can I recover an overwritten Passkey?

I added a Passkey as a security key to one of my Google accounts, and then I added another Passkey as a security key to another of my Google accounts. Then I realized that the first Passkey I added was overwritten by the second Passkey. Is there a way to recover the overwritten, first passkey? I'm about to lose access to the said Google account.

The second Passkey still works as it should: when I log into the second Google account on my MacBook, a TouchID prompt pops up. The first Passkey used to work the same way, but after I added the second Passkey, the following prompt pops up instead of a TouchID prompt:

Choose how you'd like to sign in to "google.com".

When I choose the first option (iPhone, iPad, or Android device), a QR code is presented. When I scan the QR code with my iPhone or iPad, I get the following error message:

There are no matching passkeys saved in your iCloud Keychain for “google.com”.

I did not realize adding a second Passkey for a domain would overwrite the first domain, even though the second Passkey is for a different username. I looked at System Settings - Passwords and Safari Settings - Passwords, but I do not see any Passkeys associated with the first Google account mentioned above.

I even looked at Keychain Access on my Mac, but I don't see any passkeys. Is there a way to recover the recover Passkey?

Hi Brian,

I’m sorry to hear that. Just to clarify, it’s a Google-specific issue. According to a Reddit user, Google doesn’t support WebAuthn, and supports an older technology called U2F, which has a weird way of updating existing credentials. I tried working with Apple Support to get an official take on this theory, and my Apple Support advisor was amazing, but the engineering team kept asking irrelevant check-off-the-list questions and didn’t even bother to watch a screen recording the Advisor and I spent much time taking, so I gave up on this.

As a counter example, I have multiple Passkeys for multiple Proton accounts. They work fine.

Passkey synchronization provides convenience and redundancy in case of

loss of a single device. However, it's also important that passkeys be

recoverable even in the event that all associated devices are lost.

Passkeys can be recovered through iCloud keychain escrow...
