This is because Time machine always works at low priority in the background, so as not to interfere with your important work. There is no reason NOT continue to use your computer while the initial backup (or any other backup) is running.

After the initial backup has completed, many users find that when they go to check, several of the far smaller incremental backups have completed and they did not even notice.
