facebook messenger

Today I received a message in Facebook messenger direct to my inbox from some gospel page...I'm not religious and it's clearly some kind of spam but I'm curious as to how the message got into my chat list and not into my message requests...is this some kind of flaw with Messenger on my iPhone? I blocked the page and deleted the message but I've never had that before...messages from non friends have always gone into my message request folder.
