Clamshell mode disconnects ipad pro from sidecar

Hello!

I feel like I am missing a setting but clamshell mode works with all of my other displays (wacom cintiq 22 HD).

I have an intel mac book pro, it is the plugged into a power source. I have my ipad pro connected to my laptop with the usb-c wire. The ipad pro and mac book are both fully updated. The ipad pro is the latest model 11inch.

I am using side car and I have set the ipad pro set to main display.

but when I go to close my laptop into clamshell mode. the ipad disconnects from side car instantly.

Is there a way to use the Ipad pro as a main display and have the laptop in clamshell mode?
