photos app stuck in an loop when connecting the iPhone (iMAC2013-catalina/iphone12 iOS15

hi there,

whenever I connect my iPhone (iPhone 12 mini - iOS 15.7.) to my iMAC (iMAC 2013-Catalina - yes I know it is old but it is the nicest computer ever build)... the photos app on the iMAC goes bazooka.. opening closing trying to connect .. looping in whatever..

I found posts here with the same problem.. but no solution.

-> its not the cable: we have other Mac Books ( MacBook Pro-Monterey / MacBook M1-Ventura) connecting the phone to these works

-> all USB ports of the iMAC show the same effect - but work fine with other devices

-> connecting other iPhones show the same effect on this iMAC

->iCloud is turned off on all devices

when the phone connects - it briefly appears on the left side in the photo app - and I can see on the top pane-there is actually no hook in the field "open photos for this device".. then the looping begins..

help is appreciated.. the iMAC does not go higher than Catalina..

Hello Ewka___,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Even though these steps are for Finder and iTunes, they may help:

"If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad

When your device is turned on and connected to your computer, it should appear in the Finder or iTunes. If you don't see it, or you get an unknown error or 0xE error, follow these steps.

1.Look in the Finder or iTunes

On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, look for your device in the sidebar of any window in the Finder.*

On a Mac with an earlier version of macOS, look for your device in iTunes.

On a PC with iTunes for Windows, look for your device in iTunes.

2.Update the software on all devices

Update your Windows PC

On your PC you might also need to update iTunes and update drivers.

3.Connect your device directly to your computer

Make sure that your device is unlocked and showing its Home Screen, then use a USB cable to connect it directly to your computer. Don't connect to a USB hub, display, or other device.

If that doesn't help, disconnect your device and all other USB devices and accessories from your computer. Then reconnect only your device.

4.Trust your computer, if asked

If you see a “Trust this Computer?” alert on your device when you plug it into your computer, tap Trust.

5.Allow the accessory to connect

When connecting your device to a Mac laptop computer with Apple silicon, your Mac might ask whether you want to allow this accessory to connect. If so, allow it to connect.

6.Restart your devices

Restart your iPhone

Restart your iPad

Restart your Mac

Restart your Windows PC

7.Try a different port, cable, or computer

The issue could be related to your computer, its USB port, or the USB cable connecting it to your device. If possible, try a different computer, USB port, or USB cable. Also check for any debris in the charging port on the bottom of your iPhone or iPad.

8.Contact us

If your computer still doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad, contact Apple Support."

More details can be found here: If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? When did you first noticed this? Is your iPhone recognized on any other apps?

Also, have you tested on another user account? That will tell you if the issue is system-wide or user-specific, and this link will walk you through how to create a new user for testing: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Cheers!
