I had my iphone 14 charging overnight and woke up to it completely not responsive this morning. I found out about resetting it by 1)quick pressing up volume 2)quick pressing down volume 3) holding the side button. It finally turned back on.
I want to make sure I didn't buy a dud phone...

If this was the first and the only instant where you experienced a crash and had to Force Restart the iPhone, then I wouldn’t worry about it. This may happen if a process or an app, running in the background, causes a crash. I recommend that you ensure that your iPhone has been updated to iOS 16.3 and continue to monitor its behavior.
If you see this behavior repeating often (several times in a day/week) then you can work on taking next steps that include resetting the iPhone to Factory Settings and then restoring it from a backup file. You can even choose to bypass the above and contact 👉 Apple Support and take advantage of the Apple 1YR Limited Warranty which should still be active on your iPhone 14.
