System settings unlock: cannot add the password in the field

I need to access the Users and Groups settings on Mac os X. When I click on the lock to unlock the system preferences panel, I can add my name but I cannot add anything in the field for the password. Even when I am on my name field and click on TAB to go to the next field, the cursor remains in the name field. After rebooting, same issue.
