Reading an SD card from night vision goggles

We just purchased some night vision goggles. When it came time to read the micro sd card, both mine and my husbands Ipad pros recognized that the lightning adaptor was plugged in but the message was “no photos”. When we plugged the same thing into my microsoft laptop, the pictures populated. Then we plugged it in to my sisters Mac and the pictures populated. We have spent untold hours researching this problem and have yet to find an answer that works. It is a real head scratcher and frustrating. The goggles are actually my husbands and he does not even use my laptop or even have access to it at times. Does anyone have an answer to this?

Firstly, you’ll need to connect at suitable SD Card reader to your iPad - for which you’ll find guidance in the [frequently overlooked] iPad User Guide:

Connect external storage devices to iPad - Apple Support

Direct import of photos from your camera SD Card to your Photo library is possible - subject to a couple of caveats:

  • the SD Card must be correctly formatted as FAT, FAT32 or exFAT (FAT64)
  • stored photos are stored within the expected DCIM folder

Import photos using Apple camera adapters - Apple Support

If you are unable to use the direct photo import feature, you can still manually access and copy photos from the SD Card using the iPad’s built-in Files App. To do so, just open the Files App - and in the Sidebar you will see your SD Card in the list of Locations. If necessary, open the sidebar by tapping the sidebar icon at top-left of the Files App Window. Photos can be copied to the iPad Photo Library, or copied to a folder of your choice either on your iPad or elsewhere.

You are very welcome.

The direct photo import feature is very fussy about directory structure and photo filenames.

You may find that some third-party file manager Apps may be more flexible. Perhaps consider Stratopherix FileBrowser - Document Manager, or its “pro version” FileBrowser Professional:

You might review the extensive online Manual and help files to determine suitability for your needs.

Thank you so much! I did do all the formatting and used an Apple lightning adapter to try and get the pictures and still I was not able to view them through "photos" like I have been able to do with all the 100's of pictures I have viewed in this way. However - your tip about accessing them through "files" was spot on! We were finally able to pull them up through the ipad and everyone is happy now!
