After update to 16.3 I now have no predictive text bar for any search engine

Since I updated last night 01.30.23 to 16.3 I lost the predictive text bar when using google. Either through safari or the app or Firefox. I have it as I’m typing this and texting so I know I didn’t inadvertently turn it off.

Hi Crappleridesagain,

Thank you for that information. So predictive text is working as expected in Messages, just not when using Google to search in Safari.

Try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Under Settings > Safari > Search Engine, change your search engine to something besides Google, then test the issue. If it works as expected, then change it back to Google and test again.
  2. Under Settings > Safari, check that Search Engine Suggestions is turned on as well as Safari Suggestions. If those settings are off, toggle them on, and test the issue.
  3. If you're still having trouble with your search results and predictive text, try clearing the browsing history in Safari: Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Please let us know if you need further help.

Take care.

I thought of that as well so i tried to use Bing. When thadid not solve the problem I used Firefox just in case it was Safari. That did not work either so I decided to download another keyboard. Gboard and I now have predictive typing again so it has to be an issue with the keyboard already installed or as I said the update created an issue. Thank you for your help. I greatly appreciate all the efforts.

Hi Crappleridesagain,

It looks like you're using the built-in keyboard. Try removing the keyboard and reinstall.

  1. Tap on the Settings app.
  2. Choose General
  3. Select Keyboard
  4. Tap Keyboards.
  5. Choose Edit and select the red dot next to the keyboard
  6. Restart iPhone and add the keyboard in the same setting.

If this issue continues with your keyboard, contact Apple Support to investigate the behavior.

Hi Crappleridesagain,

We recommend you try the steps in the link below in reverse order to learn how to turn on predictive text.

Use predictive text on iPhone - Apple Support

To perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above, complete the steps in the section titled "Turn off predictive text."

1) While editing text, touch and hold the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key.
2) Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn off Predictive.

When you turn off predictive text, iPhone may still try to suggest corrections for misspelled words. To accept a correction, enter a space or punctuation, or tap Return. To reject a correction, tap the “x.” If you reject the same suggestion a few times, iPhone stops suggesting it.

We recommend the steps above because they will show you how to use predictive text on your iPhone.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.
