Transfer photos from iPhone to Mac with photo information

I am trying to download photos from my iPhone to my Mac for then downloading to a portable hard drive

I want to keep all the photo information (such as date and location) with the photos. I believe that is called metadata

I have done this successfully previously by selecting: File > Export > Export Unmodified Original

However, when now downloading, the date in Finder is today's date, rather than the dates of the videos

The only difference to my previous set-up is that I now use iCloud Photos (with optimised storage turned on) - would that mean I can't keep the date etc when downloading out of the library?

Thank you

The usual effect is that, when you use File > Export > Export Unmodified Original, Finder will show the original capture date.

When you use File>Export>Export nn Photos, the edited version is exported, and Finder will show date of the export. This is because the picture may have been changed. However, the "Captured Date" stored inside the metadata remains the original capture date. Finder shows the file date.

I just double checked-- it works that way. Using iCloud makes no difference. Are you sure you didn't choose the edited export?

This is what I get with the two export methods of the same photo:

"Optimize Storage" may keep a smaller screen-sized image on the Mac until you want to edit or export or print-- then it loads a full sized image. It will actually keep full-sized images until it detects that you need the extra storage on your Mac. You could check for sure by using Commad-I in Finder to see how big each image is. This is for the two files above:

The sizes are the same. The Original has no keywords or title, because they were added later.

This is some of the metadata for the Edited file. You can see both the file date (today) and the Created date. I looked at the metadata with the GraphicConverter app.

So why do you get something different?

To find out what's going on, try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens.
  • Start in Safe Mode (different for different computers) This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work is also diagnostic.
