Series 3 Apple Watch Pairing

Will an Apple watch Series 3 work with an iPhone 11 Pro Max with the iOS 16.3?  Not sure why very time I try to pair it, I get a message that says its needs to be a series 4 or higher. Any idea why this is happening?

Since 16.1.1 the pairing to iOS16 has been possible but you must

  • Erase the Watch completely
  • Set up as a new Watch, do not restore any backup

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

Or you can erase it in Find My or https://icloud.com/find.

Wait for the process to finish, then set up your Apple Watch again. Set up your Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

When asked, set up as new..

I would say that the answer to your question is "Yes".

I had an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 16 and was running a Series 3 (GPS). I don't remember which version of iOS 16 (.1 or .2). I also don't recall which version of watchOS but I'm pretty certain that it was 8.7.1.

I started having issues updating it, probably when watchOS 8 was released.

But you still need to take into account what both those guys have said. It's getting harder.
