Airpod Pros cutting in and out on phone calls only

My Airpod Pros are cutting in and out on phone calls only. This does not happen while listening to music etc. This problem happened with the first generation Airpods and I replaced them with Airpod Pros in the summer thinking that was the problem. While the frequency of the problem was reduced it never went away. Recently the frequency of the problem has increased and it is very disruptive. To temporarily "resolve" the issue, I have to take the airpods out, put them in their case, turn the phone to speaker or use as normal for a few minutes and then I can put the airpods back in and they usually work again. I have taken my phone and my airpods to the Genius bar and have had both checked out. Both are working correctly according to them. In addition, I have tried the following with my Airpods:

-disconnected and re-connected to the phone

-reset the airpods

-Powered down the phone and powered it back up

-ensured they were charged

-ensured I had the right firmware (5B59) and iOS versions (well, I am running 16.2 but 16.3 was just released and the problem has been happening since the summer)

-I've checked my bluetooth connection but this happens regardless of where I am. I can be at my desk on a call, I can be in the car, I can be walking outside in open air.

Any solutions that I have not tried would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Walters_Anton,

You've already completed some excellent troubleshooting. For help with your AirPods disconnecting on calls, be sure to also test the steps below found in the article here: If your AirPods won't connect

"If you can't connect to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch has the latest version of iOS or that your iPad has the latest version of iPadOS.
  2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging.
  3. To make sure that Bluetooth is on, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  4. If your AirPods are connected, make sure that they're selected as your audio device. If your AirPods appear in the list of devices but they don't connect, go to the next step.
  5. Close the lid, wait 15 seconds, then open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for up to 10 seconds. The status light on the front of the charging case should flash white, which means that your AirPods are ready to connect.
  6. AirPods charging cases
  7. Hold the charging case, with your AirPods inside and the lid open, next to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  8. Follow the steps on the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  9. Test your AirPods. If you still can't connect, reset your AirPods."
