I manually manage music and podcasts over 9 iPod nanos. I do not choose to sync. I have thousands of music files and subscribe to over 30 podcasts. From what I read, it seems the latest Apple hardware and software is incompatible with my needs. Am I wrong?

Sync is just the generic term for transferring content from the computer to the iPod. It does not mean. you'll get a curated list of content.
Whatever you select, you can transfer manually yourself as shown in the screen shot above.
You can select specific albums, artists, tracks or playlists you have made and transfer just that to the connected device. Nothing at all, in any support document, suggests there is any type of algorithm or randomization involved at all.
You transfer what you choose to transfer.
All the articles I read tell me how to sync under the Finder. Fine. I do not sync. I use playlists. I have hundreds of them. When I listen to music, I want it my way not according to anyone's algorithm or randomization. I archive podcast6s often for later listening.
I have yet to see anything about manually managing files and playlists.
So why does the iPod nano setup differentiate between sync and manual? If I select sync I have to have a specific directory dedicated to that sync. Plus if I delete an item from the iPod or in the chosen directory that deletion is mirrored. This has been the case since I bought my first nano the year it came out. Has this changed?
