display resolution options are limited

Yesterday when I connected my laptop to my external monitor, my resolution options changed and now I only have two options for screen resolution. 1280x720 and 800x600. I'm not sure what I used to use, but everything is much larger now and not as clear. I've rebooted, unplugged and restarted and nothing has changed. My laptop display is the same, but my external monitor options changed. Any idea why? I don't think I updated anything...

I ended up opening my laptop while it was connected to my monitor and the mirrored display option appeared. I unchecked the box, closed the laptop and my desktop monitor had the resolution options back. no idea how the mirrored option got turned on... thank you thank you thank you for your assistance! I can see clearly now LOL

27-in Apple Cinema Display: native DVI resolution: 2560 by 1440

DVI displays wider than 1920 wide require more expensive Dual-Link DVI cables and adapters, all the way through.

Dual link has an extra set of three data conductors to carry the additional information required for higher resolutions.

as search for a J5create brand dual-link adapter comes up empty, but there are now some direct from USB-C to Dual-Link DVI in one adapter. they are a bit pricey. This one at US$30.99 on Amazon:

The problem has returned and this time regardless of if I choose main, extended or mirror, I cannot get the resolution I need.

about a month ago my display options became limited to 1280x720 and 800x600 making for very poor resolution on my monitor. i’ve tried to change the display settings on the laptop from mirror, to extended to main, but nothing I do will all me more resolution options like i used to have and this is wearing on my vision. Is there a fix for this?
