sidebar won't appear on left side
The sidebar on my mac won't appear on the left hand side of the screen. If I open up the dock I can move it to the bottom or right side but if I click on the left side icon the sidebar disappears.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?
If it's system wide I suspect you need to reinstall the OS

I'd quit Sys Prefs & try trashing these & restart...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Change the resolution as a test in Sys Prefs>Displays>Scaled
Are they still in...
/System/Library/LaunchAgents/?
If not reinstall the OS ASAP.
Ok, booting in safe mode doesn't make any difference but switching to a new user does so it looks like an issue with the main user account. Any idea what it might be? Alternatively is there a way to transfer all my programs and settings to the new account?
I'm wondering if you actually got to the Users Library?
~ tilde indicates your user library folder
Apple hid the Users' Library folders...
Method 1:
Ok, I've done that, it looks like the same folder. As well as the com.apple.finder.plist file there are 3 other / finder.plist files with extensions - e.g com.apple.finder.plist.0JjdJ6W. Should I trash them as well? There is also a com.apple.dock.extra.plist file?
Yes, should be fine if they're in your Users folder.
I hope you didn't delete the ones outside of your User's folder that the OS uses to replace deleted ones with a default plist.
If you did you'll need to reinstall the OS.
Has it ever been setup with another Monitor on the left?
No, it's only happened since I installed high sierra, prior to that it worked fine. I have noticed that the mouse pointer will move right off the left screen but not on the bottom or right screens.
Yep, tried all of them already, no difference.
Ok... how do I get to "users"?
Ignore that, found it. I trashed the 3 files, no change. At the end of the day it's no big issue, I can live with the dock at the bottom. I'm just curious why this issue has popped up.
Corruption can happen for many reasons.
Any other ideas? It not, many thanks for your help, much appreciated. Cheers
