Which system version is running on your Mac?
And which version of iPhoto do you have installed?
iPhoto is no longer supported by the newer system versions. Apple stopped selling iPhoto in 2015, when the successor "Photos.app" has been released and the last iPhoto update has been released.
Since then, we could still run iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1 on OS X 10.10.3 to macOS 10.14, the last system version supporting iPhoto. No full version of iPhoto can run on macOS 10.15 or later. If you still have an older version of iPhoto installed, not purchased from the AppStore, it is no longer possible to update it to iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1. This should have been done on OS X 10.9 Mavericks in 2014, when iPhoto has been moved to the AppStore. Since then, the old versions from the CDs/DVDs can no longer be updated.
You can access the photos and videos in your iPhoto Libraries with the Photos.app, but it will depend on the system version you are having current ly installed.
- On macOS 10.10.3 to macOS 12 you can open the iPhoto Libraries in Photos, when you launch Photos while holding down the options key ⌥ and select the iPhoto Library. This will create a new Photos Library, similar to your iPhoto Library with all albums and folders and most metadata.
- On macOS 13 Ventura you can import photos and videos from your iPhoto Libraries to Photos. use "File > Import" and select the library to import from. This will only import the photos and videos, but not the albums .
