Apple always asks to trust devices

I'm reading "When you sign in to a new device for the first time, you need to provide two pieces of information—your Apple ID password and the six-digit verification code that’s automatically sent to your phone number or displayed on your trusted devices." on page Manage two-factor authentication for your Apple ID from iPhone - Apple Support

This is neat-o and all, but when I log into any apple dot com page, it doesn't just happen the first time, it asks me to choose to Trust the device or not every time, on every device. This also happens every time I plug in an Apple device to a computer. Mac or Windows. This is super-annoying.

Now, I don't log into Apple or plug in my device every day. It's maybe zero to 3 times a month. I can't tell if it's a time-out thing, because Apple doesn't state anywhere anything about timeouts. For all intents and purposes, it needs me to physically state that I trust all of my devices every single time.

Can you clarify? Either there's hidden logic here or something's broken.

You didn't read what I wrote, and are answering questions I didn't ask.

I get the "Trust" prompt _every time_ on _any device_ using _any browser_ to sign into Apple, and when I connect any Apple device to any desktop computer.

I don't use Safari normally, I use Chrome normally. It doesn't matter which browser I use. Read what the prompt says it will do if I select "Trust". It's _never_ accurate.

Please somebody who knows how to read and has patience explain why Apple's prompt here never behaves the way it says it will.

Hi dhinged,

Regarding the recognition of trusted computers, About the 'Trust This Computer' alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch offers the following:

"Get help

If you tap Trust or Don't Trust, but your computer doesn't accept your answer, or if the Trust alert won't appear, follow these steps. Try again after each:

  1. Make sure that your computer has the latest version of macOS or the latest version of iTunes
  2. Disconnect and reconnect your device from your computer.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Restart your device:
  1. Reset your Location & Privacy settings.

If the above steps don't help, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before.

If you downloaded iTunes for Windows from the Microsoft Store, make sure that iTunes Mobile Device Helper is enabled as a startup item.

If you still need help, contact Apple Support."

With regard to sites you visit, Safari Preferences allow options to delete or clear cookies and cache which can removed the stored trusted status for a page resulting in repeated prompts. The specific steps to change those preferences will vary by device.

Regards.
