My iPhone is at iOS 16.3 so hopefully this will help.

  1. To start the delete process: In Mail, I slide the email notice to the left and select Trash. At this point, the email is not deleted. It is simply in the trash.

  • Next, I open the Trash mail folder by selecting the icon below then scrolling down to Trash.

  • From there, tap Edit > Select All,

  • Then select Delete > Delete All from the bottom of the screen. At this point, the mail is deleted from everywhere. I normally delete Trash once a day.

I hope this helps.

Assuming that you are using an IMAP or POP3 mailbox, you can configure the email account to remove deleted mail messages from the Trash/Bin folder after:

  • Never
  • One Day
  • One week
  • One month

It follows that if you have selected Never, the Trash/Bin folder will not be cleared of deleted mail messages until you manually delete mail from these folders. Each mailbox has its own setting.

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your mail account] > Account > Advanced > [Deleted Messages] Remove - set as required

Here is what I do. It seems to delete the email from the server as well as from my iPad/iPhone.

  2. Next, I open the Trash mail folder and tap Edit > Select All, then Delete > Delete All. At this point, the mail is deleted from everywhere. I normally delete Trash once a day.

I tried to keep my answer simple, If you need help or illustrations for the steps, let me know.

Hello thanks but I consider it apples job to provide adequate information.

I have a problem with Apple Mail on iPad Pro iOS 16 and previous versions as all the emails I delete are not being deleted on the server. I had assumed this was automatic and there is a setting for this until I got repeated messages from my ISP mail provider telling me my inbox was full. I delete my emails regularly and was not pleased when I had to waste more time finding and deleting the same emails on the mail website which I normally never use as I always use Mail.

if there is a simple 5 minute answer for the settings fine but I am not prepared to spend further hours on this issue having looked at the advanced settings and being told by apple they can’t help and by my ISP I would have to purchase an annual subscription for their support or pay a one off fee which I do not consider worthwhile as there is no guarantee it would solve the issue.

Apple say it is an ISP issue and the ISP maintains the problem lies with Apple Mail.

Hi, have just read your reply for the second time. This is exactly what I do as well. The emails delete in Apple Mail but not on the server. It is from the ISP I then got warnings that the inbox is full and as a result I cannot accept any more emails. I then have to manually delete them all for a second time from the website which is very time consuming and which I am sure is a settings issue for which neither apple support or the ISP are able to provide a solution.

I just hope by changing both Mac and iPad, as described below, to one month this could solve the issue as there may have been a conflict. However, the emails on the server date back many years. As said, until just recently I never use the website mail programme and was totally unaware until these recent ISP warnings that the mails were not being deleted.

if I have to keep going to the website to delete these emails using Apple Mail seems rather pointless. According to Apple support compatibility with Apps is a choice of the providers but I still don’t exclude a settings problem for which I expect Apple to provide clear instructions, hence my opening comment.

Hi Many thanks. Maybe it works best with iCloud or some providers, but it doesn’t work with mine either because of an issue with the settings or simply because they do not provide the service, although all the other functions work which still leads me to suspect the former is the issue.

I have done as I explained in my previous comments, several times. Their support charges are too high and especially as it may not help. They have already given all the limited free support they are prepared to offer.

i just checked on my website email and had once again to delete all the mail already deleted from my Apple Mail manually. I have created specs for now but all of this wastes an enormous amount of time for services one expects to run smoothly.

Have just noted it is set at one week on my iPad and one month on my Mac. Have now changed both to one month. Maybe this was the problem?

If you are short of space - as a diagnostic exercise - I suggest that your client devices are set to clear expired messages after ONE DAY. Then in 48hrs, review the situation with available mailbox space.
