iPod Touch and iTunes quit working together

Does anyone know why my iTunes on my computer keeps refusing to connect with my iPod Touch 6thG? I am getting the message I have the wrong iTunes software on my iPod. It instructs me to use the iTune installer and delete and reinstall iTunes on the the iPod. I updated all software on computer and iPod.
