how to update ios on PC when not enough storage on phone

Have insufficient storage to update phone. Message on phone says can update by connecting phone to PC and logging into itunes. I've done that but the only thing that appears on itunes is information about how to update on phone. How can I update with phone connected to PC & logged into itunes (phone & PC are wifi connected)?
