Delete the WhatsApp app, delete any add-on first-few-hops VPN client app present, update the iPhone to iOS 16.3 (current) if not already, restart the iPhone, re-download the WhatsApp app, and try again.

If that fails to resolve this, contact Meta WhatsApp support: Contact a third-party vendor - Apple Support

What is add-on first-few-hops VPN client app present?

Phone is updated to latest iOS

Have backup WhatsApp data to iCloud, uninstalled and reinstalled WhatsApp with backed up data but the issue still exists.

WhatsApp told me this, and I do not understand as to how can restore be done and also a new phone can be set up?

Turn your phone off for 30 seconds then back on. Delete and reinstall WhatsApp. To learn how, tap here. If you previously backed up your WhatsApp chat history to iCloud, you’ll be able to restore your chats when you reinstall.

  • Backup and restore your iPhone using iCloud or iTunes. To learn how, tap here. It’s possible that the iOS is causing this crash, even if the crash only occurs on WhatsApp. For more information on how to restore your phone to a backup, visit Apple Support here.
  • If the issue returns after restoring a backup, restore your phone and set up as new without restoring a backup. For more information on how to restore your phone and set as new, visit Apple Support here. Be sure to tap Set Up as New iPhone instead of restoring a backup.

If you don’t know what a VPN is, you probably don’t have one installed. You’d be seeing VPN shown in the display, if you did.

Meta is suggesting a factory reset and starting over. If you want to do that, that’s your decision.

Alternatively, if a third-party app is not working for you, delete it and use something else. Delete WhatsApp, and use Apple Messages, Signal, or one of the many fine alternatives.

As for why they might be having issues with this app, Meta have published their “architecture”, and by all appearances, it’s massive, and seemingly unnecessarily and inordinately complex. Requiring an entire day to build an app is… unusual. So is wrapping…everything. And if something goes wrong somewhere in all that, well, here we are. As for other Meta app bugs, display scrolling was blowing up for Meta apps a week or three back, and they eventually fixed that in app updates.
