Reverting to a previous version of an excel document stored on iCloud

Hi,

I have been using iCloud for my work, and Office 365 on my Macbook Pro.

Recently I saved an excel document that I had been working on, but it looks like either the data entered wasn't saved, or I saved the document over a previous version of it. Either way, when I opened the Excel document a few days later the data was gone from the sheet in that workbook.

All the suggestions on the internet suggest File > Revert To > Browse All Versions but this doesn't exist in the "File" menu of my version of Excel.

Similarly, when I log into my iCloud account, it doesn't seem to have an option for accessing previous version of an excel file. Because I'm not using OneDrive the 'Browse Version History' is also greyed out, apparently this is not supported by Microsoft if the document is saved locally.

Is there a way to retrieve a previous version of this document from iCloud?

Hi jimmytexan,

It sounds like you need to locate a file that was either overwritten or removed. We have a few suggestions:

  1. Check to see if you're able to restore the file using the steps here:
On iCloud.com
1. Sign in to iCloud.com.
2. Go to iCloud Drive.
3. In the bottom-right corner, select Recently Deleted items.
4. Browse the list of files.
You can also go to Settings > Restore Files. After 30 days, files are removed from Recently Deleted and Restore Files.

Find additional information here: Access and manage your files in iCloud Drive - Apple Support

2. If iCloud synced your files across your devices, you might want to check another device such as an iPad or iPhone to see if the version of the file that you're looking for appears on any other device.

3. If you back up your Mac using Time Machine, you could also try to restore the file from your Time Machine backup: Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support

Take care.

Hi melissa_m77

Thanks for your reply.

The file in question wasn't deleted - it was saved over (accidentally) so I couldn't find it in Deleted items.

When I go to Settings I don't see "Restore Files" but there is a Data Recovery tab, however, there are only 6 files in that tab and they seem to be files deleted last month. Is there any other way of recovering a file that was saved over?

I am running Big Sur 11.6.7

Cheers,

Jim
