Why iPhone 14 Pro Max to MacBook Pro backup is very slow?

All I am trying to do is sync the music from my 2019 Macbook Pro 16" with i9 CPU onto my iPhone 14 Pro Max w/ 1TB storage. No photos, videos, or movies are being synced.

I wanted to skip the backup, but the Skip Backup button is always greyed out, so I cannot opt-out. The current backup speed is between 32-47 MB/s. Is this the current speed for my new iPhone that I am using? Also, there's a way to skip the backup before it starts?

At this rate, it will probably take at least two hours of backup and syncing.

Thank you.

Hello BookX,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. The time in which it takes your iPhone to back up relies on the speed of the cable you have connected between your iPhone and computer. It also relies on the read/write speeds of the hard drive you are backing up to.

To turn off backing up in Finder, click on your device and choose iCloud as opposed to the computer.

To sync your music, try following these steps.

"The Finder is a macOS feature for browsing and accessing content on your computer. If you update to macOS Catalina or later, you can use the Finder to sync content between your Mac and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The experience is similar to using iTunes.

Instead of the Finder, you can also use iCloud and Apple Music or similar services to keep content from your Mac or PC in the cloud. That way, you can you can access your music, photos, and more on your devices when you aren't near your Mac. If you do that, some of the Finder syncing features described below might turn off.

If you use iCloud or other services like Apple Music to keep your content up to date across all of your devices, some syncing features through the Finder might be turned off.

What you can sync with the Finder

  • Albums, songs, playlists, movies, TV shows, podcasts, books, and audiobooks.
  • Photos and videos.
  • Contacts and calendars.

Learn how to use iCloud to sync content from MessagesMail, and Notes.

Sync or remove content using the Finder

  1. Open a Finder window and connect your device to your computer using a USB cable. Learn what to do if you don't see your device listed in Finder.
  2. After your device appears in the sidebar of the Finder window, click the device to select it.
  3. If prompted, trust your device. You might be asked to update to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  4. Select the type of content that you want to sync or remove from the horizontal list. To turn syncing on for a content type, select the checkbox next to “Sync [content] onto [user’s] iPhone.” More syncing options will now be available.
  5. Select the checkbox next to each item that you want to sync.
  6. A Finder window shows the options for syncing music with a connected iPhone

  7. Click the Apply button in the lower-right corner of the window. If syncing doesn't start automatically, click the Sync button. You may also be prompted to authorize your computer to complete the sync."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hello justinb2603

I appreciate your quick reply. Thank you in advance for your support.

Regarding your instructions:

"Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. The time in which it takes your iPhone to back up relies on the speed of the cable you have connected between your iPhone and computer. It also relies on the read/write speeds of the hard drive you are backing up to. "

I believe the issue I have described is clear and to the point. I did the backup to my Mac's local SSD and used the original Apple USB-C to Lightning cable accessory that the iPhone 14 Pro Max came within its box. The speed at which the MAC writes to and reads from its SSD is well above 2.2GB/s and 2.6GB/s, respectively.

Please refer to the screenshot below:

  1. Why the "Skip Backup" button is greyed-out and not active so I can skip the ongoing process like it was before the latest macOS Ventura update? That button should work as intended.
  2. The rate at which data from the iPhone is written to backup is between 42-47 MB/s. Since I am using only Apple hardware and accessories, why is the data written at such a slow speed?

Thanks again.

Hello,

Ok, I went to Genius Bar and asked the question... but they can't help!? The speed of which the backup is performed is automatically adjusted to 40 MB / s, with +/- 7MB. This cannot be changed.

Why the iPhone or MacBook Pro computer don't, somehow, let each other know... hey, it's okay to write faster to the internal SSD of the Mac because the write benchmark of its SSD is at 2.2GB/s ... in standby, and with external power supply cable attached.

Is this true that this cannot be fixed, because it's a Fixed backup bandwidth? I see same slow backup issue in Activity Monitor app:Thanks in advance for your support.
