AirPods 1st gen battery repair

I went to the apple store to get my 1st gen AirPods pro battery repaired. Unfortunately, My case was the problem because it wouldn't charge and the apple technician wasn't able to see what was causing it through their part because the case would not charge/ turn on. They told me they have no case test to test my airpods to see if it works at different cases. Technician tried to charge and hold the button, a blinking white came on but would go off when button is released. They told me If i bought the case replacement for $50, they would not guarantee it would work and I wouldn't be able to return the replacement for a refund.

Should I risk paying $50?

I have no applecare.
