Ventura mail POP not available?

For years, I have been using POP to retreive email from my provider with Apple's mail program, and have archived the messages in a hierarchy of mailboxes on my main Mac. From my mobile devices, I could access the same email account using IMAP, thus having fast access to new incoming messages and the opportunity to clean up clutter. (Yes, I don't trust all my email to be stored in the cloud).

As I have kept updating MacOS for many years, I now decided for a clean install of MacOS Ventura, which so far worked pretty well. To my surprise, when trying to activate my email account, I was only asked for the email address and the password - and then an IMAP account was created. Is there any way (that I cannot find) to change the account to POP? When using my email address (which btw is identical to my AppleID), I don't seem to be getting a choice... Is this information somehow propagated through iCloud?

Any hint is welcome!

Mac mini, macOS 13.2

An excerpt from the following link regrind manually setting up iCloud configurations

iCloud Mail server settings

  • iCloud Mail uses the IMAP and SMTP standards supported by most modern email client apps. iCloud Mail does not support POP.
  • If you set up an account using iCloud System Preferences or macOS Mail in 10.7.4 or later, you won't see these settings because they're automatically configured.
  • Refer to your email client app's documentation for information about how to use these settings.

Apple (and, I should say, the industry in general) has been driving users away from POP for years.

For a while now, there has been a hidden trick to install POP accounts.

I have not tried it in Ventura, but I expect that it may still work:

1) Create your new account, just as if it were IMAP. Enter a WRONG password

2) When asked to set your details a second time, there should be an option to choose POP. Fill in the right password this time.

Note: it is not like POP itself does not work: if you upgrade your OS, or migrate a user account that included some POP e-mail accounts, they work. I know that from experience, as I still have a POP account myself. I clean installed Ventura and then migrated my user accounts from Time Machine, and my POP account is just fine.

FWIW, you can still use the same strategy of local mailboxes, even if your accounts are IMAP or Exchange: just drag your messages to any mailboxes that are under "On My Mac".
