I purchased some text tones from iTunes, which work on my iPhone and iPad — but can’t seem to sort out how to get them to work on my Mac. Could it be that Apple hasn’t figured this out yet???

It cannot be done on recent macOS versions. There was a workaround on older versions, but due to the tightened security on system files in the newer versions, it would not work. The only tones that can be picked on macOS are the pre-installed ones.
