Choppy facetime calls on wifi but perfectly fine calls on cellular data

There was a question asked by: snellchristian Posted on May 3, 2021 at 3:41 AM

Hello team, facetime calls have started to get very choppy on wifi, but works perfectly fine on cellular data. I've a perfectly fine working wifi connection at 60mbps. This is not just related to my home wifi but the problem is with every other wifi network. The problem has started suddenly and I've tried restarting my phone, ipad many times and also gone through the settings, but it is the same. Kindly help me with the problem, it is very frustating.

His question was answered by: SravanKrA and this was his reply:

Check your WiFi Router / Modem for --> Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points ...

Connecting to Wifi is the first part and then getting connected to the Internet is the second

  1. If you connect to Wifi, doesn't necessarily mean you are connected to the internet. If you are not connected to wifi could be a problem with iPhone settings or Router/Modem Settings
  2. If you are not connected to the internet is the sole issue of Router / Modem Settings. Contact your ISP immediately

For your Internet connection.

  • Over Cellular: contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider). The agency who issued the SIM to you
  • Over WiFI: Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider), the agency who provided the Internet Service on your Modem/Router to you

The answer provided doesn't even come close to answering the question posted. His answer seems to address issues with establishing an internet connection, which the poster has. Their question addresses the "quality" of the Facetime video call. It doesn't make sense that the WiFi connection, which should be faster, has a poorer experience. I too have experienced this. You make a Facetime "video" call on your cellphone, and the picture is crystal clear; however, when connected to WiFi, (the preferred connection), the picture starts out very blurry. You have to remain on the video call for several minutes BEFORE the picture starts to clear up. So the question is, "why is this?" You're supposed to get faster speeds when connecting via WiFi. Is the 5G Cellular connection faster?

I performed a speedtest on both devices, cellphone connected via 5G: 182.19 Mbps, and on my 12" iPad Pro connected to my home's WiFi: 427.35 Mbps. So speed isn't the contributing factor. I want to know if Apple has been focusing more on making the Cellular connections more stable. Obviously the case. They should be focusing on making the connection more stable across the board. As customers, we pay for a good stable internet connection, weather cellular or WiFi, so there shouldn't be any discrepancy with the performance of Facetime.

Hi mrmackavelli,

We appreciate you reaching out to us. We'd like to start by setting your expectations.

Some issues may exhibit the same behavior, but in most cases, the root cause is different.

This is the reason why we handle every issue individually.

If you know anyone experiencing a similar issue, please let them know that we are more than happy to help them.

Next, we’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

  1. When did you start to experience this issue?
  2. Have you had the chance to restart your iPhone and iPad?

In the meantime, let’s check for a software update and make sure that you are running the latest version of iOS and iPadOS.

While it isn't inherently assured that an update will resolve the issue, updating to the latest software version for your device can help isolate potential software issues.

Kindly secure a backup and update.

  1. How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  2. Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

It may also help if you make sure that you are using the recommended Wi-Fi settings.

If you haven't, please make sure you have enough storage.

Not having enough storage may cause performance-related issues.

  1. "Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage and read the recommendations that iOS or iPadOS might provide.
  2. Tap Enable to turn on a recommendation, or tap a recommendation title to review the content that you can delete."

I said, ....."You make a Facetime "video" call on your cellphone, and the picture is crystal clear; however, when connected to WiFi, (the preferred connection), the picture starts out very blurry." ......meaning, I used the same device for both types of call, cellular vs. WiFi. So space, version of OS, etc...would have no bearing, since it's on the same device for both types of calls. It was only later that I used an iPad to rule out any difference by using another type of device.
