Apple iPad Air 3 screen frozen and black

Bought this new early 2020, and during the last six months, the screen won’t wake up, there is a a lit background most of the time so it’s a grey screen. I can give it a break, by pressing home and off button simultaneous. That doesn’t really make a difference. Pressing the on off button many times can result in the iPad opening normally. Software is up to date, I’ve switched it off a few times. Any ideas please?

A forced-restart may help - as this will often resolve an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Should the problem persist, given your description, you might be well advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support - and request a remote diagnostic test. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

Thanks for the help. I’ve done that , regularly when I’m trying to wake it up. It does have the home button. The issue is recognised by Apple. iPad Air (3rd generation) Program for Blank Screen Issue - Apple Support

iPad Air (3rd generation) Service Program for Blank Screen Issue

Apple has determined that, under certain circumstances, the screen on a limited number of iPad Air (3rd generation) devices may go blank permanently. A brief flicker or flash may appear before the screen goes blank.

Affected devices were manufactured between March 2019 and October 2019. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service eligible devices, free of charge.

Since it is now well beyond the guarantee, I’m not sur if Apple would do this. For me to get an Apple shop is a fair trek.

If you have identified a relevant Apple Service Programme that applies to your particular issue, on the proviso that the device shows no visible signs of other damage damage, Apple usually honour the repair Service Programme repair regardless of warranty status.

However, if visible other damage is identified, Apple do reserve the right to insist that the other damage is remediated as customer-chargeable repair prior to resolving the issue to which the Service Programme relates.
