Resetting old ipod

Hello, I have an old iPod touch and i've been trying to reset it. I don't know what the password is & I just want to reset it so I can start to use it. I've put it in recovery mode and iTunes can see it but won't let me reset it. If I put it in DFU mode, again iTunes can see it, starts to download the software & then says "this ipod was previously is DFU mode but restarted and is no longer in DFU mode. To restore this iPod from DFU mode, disconnect it and place it in DFU mode again." - However, it is still in DFU mode. Why does iTunes tell me it isnt?

Any other ways of resetting it?

*just to add as an edit, if I put it in recovery mode, it comes up with the same message as it says when in DFU mode (as mentioned above)

Thank you

Hello MattBonnell,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Sounds like your iPod touch is in recovery mode, but will not complete the restore process on your computer. If this is the case, try restarting your computer. This usually helps refresh things. Make sure that you disconnect any other third-party accessories from your computer as well. Just to avoid any possible interference with the restore. After your computer restarts launch iTunes and try to restore the iPod touch again: If you forgot your iPod touch passcode - Apple Support

If the same error continues to occur with this specific computer, you might want to consider using a different computer to complete the restore process. Additional steps you can try can be found below:

1.) Make sure your Mac or PC is fully updated.

2.) Try using a different cable or USB port on your computer.

3.) Disable firewalls or anti-virus softwares. This can prevent your device from properly restoring.

We hope these steps are helpful. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Cheers.
