making call on watch goes straight to iphone speaker instead of airpods connected to watch

Every time I make a call from my Apple watch with my airpods connected TO THE WATCH, I hear the person I called on my iPhone's speaker. I've heard there is supposed to be 3 dots on the watch Phone app during a call where I can switch the call to the watch, but I do NOT have 3 dots on my screen. I have only the red hang-up button. Where is the documentation for this? Do I have to swipe up? Down? Squiggly? I have spent hours looking for the solution to this problem. It can't be this hard. Why doesn't a call connect on the device being used to make the call?!??!? And why doesn't it use the currently connected APPLE-MADE airpods?!?!?!

Hi amaneta,

For help with using your AirPods with calls on your Apple Watch, test the steps below found in the article here to ensure they're paired: Use AirPods and other Bluetooth accessories with Apple Watch

"Pair your Bluetooth accessory

  1. Put your Bluetooth accessory in pairing mode using the instructions that came with it.
  2. On your Apple Watch, tap Settings > Bluetooth. Your Apple Watch will search for nearby Bluetooth accessories.
  3. Choose your Bluetooth accessory.
  4. If asked, enter a passkey or PIN."

If paired as mentioned later in the article "When you set up AirPods with your iPhone, they're simultaneously connected to both your Apple Watch and iPhone, and they play sound automatically from either device."

You can also check your AirPods settings with the help of the steps here: Switch your AirPods to another device - Apple Support, and Switch AirPods between Apple devices

Cheers.
