iPod classic suddenly won't allow me to sync

My last generation iPod classic got a new solid-state drive last year. It has been working fine, but all of a sudden today it won't play anything, and when I plug it in, Music doesn't even enable the "Sync settings..." button...it just says "Loading" endlessly. What can I do?

I think in this context restore from disk utility would be used to restore the drive from another drive or Time Machine backup, which you won't have. If you connect in disk mode and then use Finder to access the device you ought to be able to restore it to factory settings. It may be that disk utility is trying to scan and repair the disk as a background operation, e.g. it has detected that the drive may have been disconnected while data was being written to it. You could try running disk first aid on the volume to see what comes up. It probably needs to be reformatted, but I'm wary to suggest it because I don't know if any additional tricks are needed to get these upgraded devices to work correctly with iTunes/Finder after a reformat.

Restore is a function in iTunes the erases the existing content on the device and reinstalls the firmware. I don't personally have any experience doing this with SSD converted iPods. You may want to seek advice from the same sources that you did when getting the device converted. Once restored you would sync with iTunes in the usual manner.

The "Restore" option in Music is not available...all I get when the unit is connected is "Loading..." If I put the unit in disk mode and connect it to the computer, I can use Disk Utility to restore, but it asks me what source to use, which I don't know what to use. I can also use Disk Utility to erase the iPod but I don't know what the effect will be on the unit as a whole if I do so.
