SE 2020 randomly switches between audio options while on calls

When making a call with my SE 2020, my phone randomly cuts out and switches between phone, speaker, and Bluetooth, and I have to manually choose the desired mode. If I start the call in speaker, it will cut me off and switch to phone. Even when I press the speaker button, the button lights up but stays on phone mode. It’s very glitchy. This does not happen during WhatsApp calls or when I have my ear buds in and use Bluetooth for the calls.

I brought my phone to an iPhone store and they told me my phone had no issues. Please advise!

We'd be happy to help out. We understand your audio output isn't working as expected and changing to different output options at random. You mentioned that at some point it switches to Bluetooth, which could indicate that there's a Bluetooth device nearby when this occurs that's connecting to your iPhone SE.


Go ahead and turn off Bluetooth under Settings > Bluetooth and test things out further. Keep us posted on the results.

I have the same model iPhone and the exact same issues you’ve described. Using my headphones is the only work around as you described. I thought maybe the proximity sensor had something to do with it but even if the phone isn’t touched during call the random switching occurs requiring tapping the speaker icon and selecting speaker from pull-down to be able to hear the caller again. My wife has the same model but she hasn’t experienced the issue on hers.

Hi again, I tried disconnecting Bluetooth and it still has the same problem: when I make or answer calls with my phone, the calls switch between voice and speaker, and I have to manually switch it back and forth between voice and speaker to continue the call. When it makes the switch, the audio always gets muted, so there are a couple of seconds that I can’t hear the caller and the caller cannot hear me.

If I put in my earbuds and use Bluetooth for a voice call, this problem does not occur. Same for FaceTime and WhatsApp calls.
