I just had another WD Passport backup drive fail on me. I use it solely for Time Machine Backup of my MacBook Air.
I’m hoping to get some current recommendations for which backup drive brands are worth considering and if possible, why.

I'm assuming, since you have been using a WD Passport, that you are looking for something that is just as portable ... correct?
If so, I suggest that you take a look at the external drives that OWC (Other World Computing) offer to get a good idea for some replacements. OWC offers very reliable drives. I do not work for them, but use a number of their products and have had nothing but positive experiences with them.
Their Envoy-series would be a good example for a direct WD Passport replacement.
