Showing 'kept' receipts to other party on audio messages when I haven't kept them

I have read receipts off (for all contacts) when it comes to my text messages. So I assumed that would cross over into audio messages/voice notes i.e. even if I were to listen to one that someone sends me, they wouldn't get a 'read' receipt.

However, I was experimenting by texting my sister, and whenever I click play on an audio message, it automatically says "Kept [insert time here]" on her side of things ... when I haven't kept it. In fact, it doesn't even give me the 'Keep' option.

Does anyone know why that is? And how I can turn it off so no 'read' or 'kept' receipts are sent at all?

Hey jeanharlow,

As it turns out, this isn't a feature of the read receipts. When an audio message is received, if you don't see the option to "Keep", you likely have the settings already set to keep the recording. We found the following that should help:

Note: Your audio message disappears from your conversation two minutes after you send it, unless you tap Keep. Recipients can still play your recording. To always keep audio messages, go to Settings  > Messages > Expire (below Audio Messages), then tap Never.

Those details can be found under "Send a recorded audio message" here: Send and receive messages on iPhone - Apple Support

Take care!
