Second monitor mirroring off

How do I turn off the mirroring between my macbook air and 2nd monitor. They are identical to one another. I want to be able to have two different applications at the same time, on on each screen.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.6

Hello kree67,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. Based on the information you provided, you'll want to set up an extended desktop with the external monitor you're using with your MacBook Air. This will allow you to use two different applications on each screen at the same time. Here are the steps on how to set this up:

"Set up the displays as an extended desktop

You can arrange your displays in any configuration to create an extended desktop. For example, you can set your external display side by side with your Mac to create one large continuous desktop.

Note: You must be connected to a display to see these options.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Displays  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the name of your display on the right, click the “Use as” pop-up menu, then choose “Extended display” or Stop Mirroring."

Following these steps can help and is outlined in this helpful article: Use one or more external displays with your Mac - Apple Support

Kind regards.
