What is "bash" and why is it on my MacBook Pro?

So, I just updated my MacBook Pro last night and when I opened it today I was told that I now have something called "bash" as one of the programs that run in the background. I also have its icon, but titled "Terminal," in my toolbar. What is it? I'm a little worried that it's something that shouldn't be there.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The Background App feature of the Ventura System Settings is currently broken and/or not fully implemented. Plus Apple never communicated any details to developers so there is currently no way to know how to design third party apps to work correctly with this feature. Some apps will show up in the Background Apps section with low level system utility names such as "open", or in your case "bash". Until Apple fixes this feature or provides documentation to developers you will just need to ignore it.

You can provide Apple with product feedback here (Apple won't respond):
