I have a Note with 2 Word documents attached. No matter how many times I click, and double click, nothing happens. I've tried on the iPad, iPhone, iMac and iCloud versions. Nada.
Grateful for any help. They are not locked. Or pinned.

Are you able to open other notes which may have Word documents attached?
If so, there might be a problem with this specific note. You mentioned trying "iCloud versions". Do you mean iCloud.com? If not, let's see if you can open these documents from there.
"You can attach items to notes by using the Notes app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac that’s signed in with the same Apple ID. You can then view and download those attachments—photos, audio files, maps, iWork files, and more—in Notes on iCloud.com.
Note: In locked notes on iCloud.com, you see placeholders for attachments instead of actual attachment content. To view attachments in locked notes, use the Notes app on your device that’s signed in with the same Apple ID.
