iPad A1337
My first Gen a1337 is not charging, power is getting into the device as the Apple logo shows for a few seconds then disappears but comes back a few seconds later, in other words, flashes on-off slowly…..

The symptoms that you describe suggest a failing/failed battery. Given the age of an iPad1, this is perhaps not unexpected…
connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge undisturbed overnight. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:
Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
Are you now able to use the iPad while remaining connected to your Power Adapter? If yes, while monitoring the indicated battery state, disconnect the Power Adapter; if the indicated battery state suddenly falls, or the iPad shuts-off, this test demonstrates the iPad battery having reached the end of its usable life. Given its age, you would be best advised to retire the iPad; battery replacement, even if possible via a third-party repaired would be uneconomic.

You are very welcome.
If you are unable to successfully restart the iPad, unless (a) you already have a backup of your photos, or (b) the photos were synchronised with iCloud Photos, you’ll not be able to recover them.
Thanks very much, I’ll try that!
it’s not been used for some time, I know it’s old but it’s really just to get the photos off it,
