No Delete option for Gmail notification

On my iPhone 14 Pro Max with iOS 16.3.1, I am not seeing the option to Delete an email from my Gmail app notifications. When I press and hold the notification I only see Archive and Reply. How can I change Archive to Delete instead?

Thanks!

Thank you for your reply @brbo and J_Johhnyboy. However I was looking for help in changing the function of the Gmail app notifications, not the Mail app notifications since I don’t use the Mail app.

In iPhone’s Settings > Mail > Accounts > Gmail, there are no swipe options or notification options.

After more digging around I was able to find that its possible to set those settings in the Gmail app.

Navigate to Settings under the hamburger menu (left), select Inbox Customizations > Mail Swipe Actions > select the option:

Archive, Trash, Snooze, Mark as read (Move does not work).

There is a left and a right swipe. Whichever two options are selected, those two will appear when a notification is long-pressed.

I hope this helps others who are looking for this setting.

Hi cannedfresh,

From what you described in your original post, we recommend you try the steps below to delete emails on your iPhone.

Delete emails on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Next, we'd like to show you how to perform the recommended troubleshooting steps via the link above. Please click to open the link, then read through the steps in the section titled "Set Trash or Archive as your default option."

Depending on the type of email account you have, you might see Archive instead of Trash when you try to delete emails. You can edit where your deleted messages go in your Mail settings:
1) In the Settings app, tap Mail.
2) Tap Accounts.
3) Tap your account.
4) Tap your account once more.
5) Tap Advanced.
6) Select Deleted Mailbox or Archive Mailbox to send discarded messages there.

We recommend the steps above because they will show you how to select Trash or Archive as the default option when deleting emails on your iPhone.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Hi cannedfresh,

Re: How can I change Archive to Delete instead?

Seems you may have set: "Archive instead of delete" for discarded eMails in Mail app.

If you want to change that setting:

Scroll to "Archive instead of delete" in Apple Support's article (link below)

Delete and recover emails in Mail on iPhone – Apple Support

change the destination mailbox for discarded emails back to the Trash mailbox.

NB:

If you have more than one eMail account, you may want to change each account

(Eg for Yahoo, GMail & etc)

Hope this helps :-)
