How can I download my files from iCloud to store on a storage drive?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13

Anything in iCloud is also on your Mac (unless you elected to optimize storage). Open the iCloud Drive folder and copy the files. Or, simply set up a Time Machine backup of your Mac to capture those files in a backup. If you optimize, and older files have been offloaded to the cloud: Those files will need to be downloaded first.
