In addition to Tom's advice, another way to reset FCP preferences is to hold the option and command keys when you launch FCP by clicking it in the Dock. A dialog will appear confirming you want to delete the preferences. Choose Delete Preferences. FCP will reset its preferences, put a diagnostics file on the desktop which you can safely move to the Trash, then it will open the default Untitled library. Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences back to the way you like them (disable background rendering, reset Import to Leave Files in Place, etc.) and see if the issue has been resolved.

Close the application. Hold Opt-Cmd as you double click the library you want to open to launch the application. A dialog appears asking you if you want to Delete Preferences.
What exactly are you doing to make the freeze or share?
No, I’m saying don’t open the application directly, either way. If you don't do the preference reset while double-clicking your library, the application will open a default Untitled library. To reset prefs and open the library you want, hold Opt-Cmd and double click the library, which will launch the application. Like all Mac apps opening a document directly from the Finder will, by default, launch the application that created it.
Please tell us what you have done already.
Did you clear the preferences, as recommended?
Did you try opening a new library, and testing there?
What exactly happens when you try to share the current frame?
Freeze and Share are complete separate. Let's lot at share. What exactly are you doing, step by step? Post screenshots of your procedure. Use Shift-Cmd-4, which allows you to drag across an area of the screen that makes a screenshot that saves to the Desktop.
to clarify... you're saying I should open FCP from the finder and browse to /library rather than click apps/fcp? to answer you question about what I'm doing, I click the place in the timeline I want to freeze, edit/create freeze frame/file/share/save current frame.
Option click doesn't bring up the trash prefs dialog for me Terry, only the option to select the library. Opt-Cmd in the Dock brings up trash prefs but then proceeds to the Untitled library.
Perhaps that would have been best for the OP. They may be working in an Untitled library.
Oops! I had just used option+click to tell FCP not to open anything so I could choose the library and that's what was in my head. Thanks for the catch Tom. I updated my post. You're on top of things as usual!

Are you:
1) making the screenshots as Tom indicated (command-shift-4, and drag)?
2) Are you using this button below your message area to post the shots?
Also, if you take a shot of the whole screen, it may be too large to post, unless you adjust its size.
You can double-click to open in Preview, and then use Tools->Adjust Size and choose eg 50%.
I'm sorry... Maybe my finder displays things differently.. but is this where you mean? applications/library and then opt-cmd when I click library?
Your FCP library. The documents with the purple four star icon.
I can't find that. since the last update nothing is where I think it should be.
By default, FCP libraries are stored in your Movies folder.
Thank you for everything you've said so far. Unfortunately nothing I have tried worked. I still can't create a freeze frame and share the current frame. Any other ideas?
