child's new iphone not sharing location

We recently upgraded my son to a new iphone and cannot see his location even though his phone thinks it is sharing its location.

Here is what happened:

  1. We had the old phone on and not erased. I could see both his old and new devices in the Find My app, but the old device was the one that showed up when clicked on the "people" tab.
  2. We were trying to find a way to get it switch to using the new phone for his location on the people tab. But because he is a minor, the option to designate that phone as the phone for sharing his location does not exist.
  3. In frustration we first tried turning off location sharing from the old phone and then completely wiping the old phone.
  4. When we turned off location sharing in the old phone, it seems to have affected the new phone. Both phones appeared on the devices list as not sharing location. Even though the new phone thinks its sharing its location.
  5. Even though we have now restarted the new phone, turned on every location setting we can find and disabled anything that might affect his ability to share location (such as Screen Time settings), nobody in our family can see his location. The new phone appears in the list of devices and says "Not sharing location • Online". Under people, he shows up with no location.

Anny suggestions of what to try

Hello segapple,

To help resolve your issue, have your son follow the steps from this article:

Share your location with your family - Apple Support

Choose which device to share your location from
You can share your location from a different device. For example, if you share your location from an iPad, you can share your location from an iPhone that you own instead.
1. On the iPhone or iPad that you want to share your location from, open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name.
3. Tap Find My.
4. Tap Use this [device] as My Location.

If the issue persists, check out the additional steps in the article.

Best Regards.

UPDATE: What did fix the problem was to restore the old phone (that I had erased) from an iCloud backup and selection share my location within that phone. I can now see both the old and new phones under the "Devices" tab of Find My app. It is still linking to the old phone under the "People" tab of Find My and I haven't figured out to fix that yet, but at least I can see my son's location in some way.
