Has anyone been able to connect a BrotherDCP-L2520DW printer to a 2016 MacBook Pro. have attempted several times but the Mac doesnt seem to recognize the downloaded drivers.

What macOS are you running on your 2016 MacBook Pro? That is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.
I have the similar Brother DCP L2540DW and have had no issues with any recent macOS, including the current Ventura.
For your DCP L2520DW, the Brother website recommends using AirPrint for recent versions (macOS 11 and later) or downloading Brother iPrint&Scan. iPrint&Scan is available in the Mac App Store. I'm using Monterey 12.6.3 and have Brother iPrint&Scan. Using a new cable to connect USB/USBc
Did manage to get one copy printed of a document I saved. Mostly need to print from straight from the Gmail page. All I get are several blank sheets ......up to 8 sometimes.
Sorry, I've never used a cable and don't know.
Only thought I have if the problem is only in printing Gmail: Are you using the Print icon near the top right of the Gmail web page rather than the browser File menu print or command P?
I'm using file menu print. tried wireless also to no avail hence reverting to cable.

What happens when you use the Print icon inside of the Gmail web page?
There is no print button inside the Gmail page. I use the File then print. Have tried to see if its buried/hidden but cannot find one.

I think my mail page has a different layout because I log in through the Apple Icon at the bottom of my screen. Definitely no printer Icon.
I shall try and log in through a different route.

Have only tried printing from email due to a recent change of MacBook.
