What macOS are you running on your 2016 MacBook Pro? That is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.

I have the similar Brother DCP L2540DW and have had no issues with any recent macOS, including the current Ventura.

For your DCP L2520DW, the Brother website recommends using AirPrint for recent versions (macOS 11 and later) or downloading Brother iPrint&Scan. iPrint&Scan is available in the Mac App Store.
