Spam overload on iCloud Email Address

Has anyone noticed an absurd amount of SPAM on icloud emails? Apple used to have the best filters. I now get upwards of 100 emails every hour in my junk folder. I used to go months before getting even 10 junk emails. What happened to Apple's spam settings?

If your account is pretty old your .mac and .me addresses are totally locked to your iCloud address as permanent aliases and can NEVER be removed. So you'll never be able to fix it from that standpoint. Try getting a spam filter like SpamSieve. Apple should be automatically doing something like that in my opinion. One solution, that could be very problematic, would be to get a different iCloud account. BUT, then you may lose some programs and will definitely lose Apple music or iTunes. Apple has no way you can move things to a new Apple iCould account without issues. Or do a new account but discontinue email totally on the old account and restart email with the new account. Then, you would still have access to things like iTunes but would have to sign in to your old account to use it. Due to the ever changing nature of spam nothing Apple offers truly works for long. Especially with spam from lists and groups. It just keeps coming with simple changes of a letter, or number somewhere in the from or to fields. What I was told was to send all spam to abuse@apple.com. Either directly or as an attachment. This takes time but if it overloads Apple maybe they'll finally start to take it seriously. Of course they don't read any of it but perhaps an uptick in numbers will be noticed. This is shameful on Apple's part. I have had many conversations with Apple about this and they either have no idea or what they offer won't really work. There is no reason I can think of for them not to allow the deletion of mac.com and me.com or to be able to switch to a different iCloud account without all the hassles and losses of programs, data, whatever. They can't even tell me what would really be affected.

YES I’ve created rule after rule to filter subjects, blocked senders and have the privacy setting set on my phone and macbook. I STILL have upwards of 150 spam emails daily in my inbox. Some are very offensive. How can I make it stop? It is getting progressively worse. I have been battling it for a couple of months now. Never had an issue before this.

Of the seven you list, I've had five of the same in my junk folder in the last few hours.

I've had a .mac account since it was introduced in 2000. I've been a legacy Mac user since 1985, and I've never been more disappointed in Apple than now. This barrage of spam just started last fall and has been unrelenting. I've followed all of Apple's advice, and still, I end up deleting hundreds of spam emails a day. I'm sure I have inadvertently deleted valid emails, but it's just too much to keep up with.

I disagree, as this is a larger software problem for Apple at present. You are certainly given your own experience as a user, but this is a very real problem for a great many that at least currently, Apple does not seem to be inclined to address, and it is representative of a more overarching issue with Apple's software of late in general, at least on the desktop side.

Putting that aside: Apple engineers. This is clearly an issue that is affecting numerous users. Kindly take the time to remedy it because it used to be a non-issue with your services. And I again I will remind: all of the content that is created for your non-desktop ecosystem is created on the desktop. Thanks.

What do you disagree with? Do you disagree with my statement that I don't work for Apple? That seems a bit odd. Or do you disagree with my statement that Apple doesn't read here for feedback or suggestions? You can believe me based on my 20 years of experience in these forums or not. That's up to you. You can keep addressing Apple if you want. It won't accomplish anything but you may find it cathartic.

Apple engineers are not reading here. If you want them to know your thoughts, use the feedback page:

I have been having this same issue as well. It is SO discouraging to read that this is ongoing and nothing seems to be helping. And see #3 below, in particular—shocking advice!

  1. I have tried all the suggestions made by Apple to deal with it.
  2. I do get a few legitimate emails in my Junk folder, so I HAVE to wade through all this nonsense stuff every day. If I don’t keep up with it, then I have HUNDREDS of emails to look through after two to three days, just in case something important is in there too.
  3. I called Apple SUpport last week. The rep told me to UNSUBSCRIBE from each of these emails. Seriously!!! This person told me to open spam emails, find the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom, and click on it. When we looked at just one specific spam email, we could clearly the sender’s email address wasn’t a legitimate: this was NOT from a real business sending me too many emails. I was flabbergasted that Apple tech support (I use that term loosely) was telling me to open and unsubscribe from spam mails!!! I felt like I knew more about protecting myself than she did!
  4. I filled in a questionnaire after that call and clearly outlined the terrible advice given to me.

I plan to call them again and escalate this, because if this is the kind of tech support person hearing about the problem, I wonder if anyone at Apple is actually forcing the correct team to pay any attention to this issue.

Meanwhile, does anyone know if a different email app would do a better job filtering out the spam before it even gets to the app, or is this a problem with my email address, and therefore I will experience the same behaviour no matter which email app I’m using?

Thank you for any ideas.

Bev

I was also told to do the same thing - unsubscribe to all of the junk messages. I explained to the specialist that:

  1. I WANT some of the messages I receive at junk - from legitimate businesses that have coupons/deals/specials, that are not urgent, and in the past, they always were shuttled directly to my junk, as I had flagged.
  2. The non-legitimate messages should NEVER be opened, and by "unsubscribing," would let the person know that my e-mail was ripe for more spam.

I am now officially up to 83 rules. Super duper frustrating, and I continue to receive spam. Again, as I've stated before, I've had this e-mail address for about 15 years now, and everything had been JUST fine until about 5 months ago. Wish it would get resolved.

I've replied on this thread several times already. I emptied my junk mail last night. This morning there were 137 new junk mails in the folder. ALL were obviously junk, and would never have even made it through the provider level just a few years ago.

This thread, and others, have led me to some conclusions. (Please forgive my "conspiraceee therieees"):

A) Apple is quite aware of this problem.

B) The software to solve this problem exists, and has existed, for decades.

C) Apple does not see this as a problem. Possible reasons:

  • Somehow, Apples is profiting from these junk messages
  • Apple is attempting to drive users away from .mac and .me addresses, so they no longer have to support those addresses.
  • Other???

The spam is out of control, and each domain uses a slightly different address to avoid any blocks. Apple isn't doing a thing to stop it, and after deleting upwards of 50 spam emails a day, and after sending dozens of complaints to apple without a response, I have finally and reluctantly decided to spend this weekend transferring my entire internet email life to a new gmail account. I bouht over 40 apple computer back in the '80's - '10's when I owned an ad agency and always thought they were the good guys. Not any more! AMF!!!

Nope - I have called Apple four times now (I think?) with my same case number, and no one has been able to resolve the issue. What is frustrating for me is that I mark items as "junk," but they keep coming to my inbox. I have marked them as "junk" directly on iCloud from my web browser, and THAT doesn't do anything, either. So it isn't a "MacBook" or "iPhone" mail problem. It is a direct problem at iCloud.

When I first started having the problem in Jan/Feb 2023, it was suggested that I call Apple to resolve the issue. The only replies I've had are, "We will look into this," or "Make sure you have preferences set to ..." (even though this problem is happening across devices and on the website itself). And the best for last (which I am currently doing):

"Make a rule for each Junk message to flag that e-mail sender as "junk."

I am now up to 91 RULES:

This is absolutely absurd and I'm super frustrated, ESPECIALLY since TODAY I had a legitimate notification from UPS about a delivery update for one of the organizations I run. WHY is it in JUNK?? I never flagged it as junk!!!!

I have been sending my junk mail daily to reportphishing@apple.com and abuse@icloud.com. All I ever get is an automated response.

Here is summary of what does not work.

  1. Rules.
  2. Apple Customer service.
  3. Forwarding junk to reportphishing@apple.com and abuse@icloud.com.
  4. Third-party spam/junk mail filters. I use SpamSieve and I still have to cull through my junk to separate good from bad. I spend more time in my junk mail folder than I do in my regular Mail folder.

Anything else that may not work for us? :)

I've tried all of the above. Nothing works. Spam increased daily - on an email account (my apple email @ iCloud) I never used. I only used my mac.com. Years ago someone used my iCloud email and I started getting spam. I did a rule that sent all *my email@icloud.com* to a trash folder on Apple's server. It never came to my inbox on my computer.

The recent spam is circumventing this. I have sent Apple the full emails that show code within the email that I think is circumventing my rule. The recent spam is not even addressed to me but I could be listed on BCC.

My rule is still working for those emails that are actually addressed to the account.

I've had to disable the Apple account from coming into my mail. I log into Apple every couple of weeks to see my actual mail - thankfully not used much.

I now show 5,500+ in my junk folder (at Apple). That is for 1 month. I'll just keep letting it build.

So sad as I have maybe 1 or 2 spam emails a month for all other email accounts combined - AOL, Outlook and a bunch of Gmails. Oh and my own website email.

Why Apple? Why?
