2023 Mac Mini M2 Pro - Editing widgets causes machine crash

I was editing one of the widgets in order to change the timezone of the clock at which point the system completely froze including the mouse pointer and requiring me to hard power-off the system. I tried this for a second time with editing the widgets and the crash occurred again.

Also having widgets is kind of pointless unless they can be permanently visible, having to click on the menu bar totally defeats their purpose.

Hi bik_dhaliwal,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with editing your widgets on your Mac mini. We'd like to help.

Just to confirm, are these the steps you're using to edit the widgets?

Customize widgets in Notification Center on your Mac
1. On your Mac, open Notification Center.
2. At the bottom of Notification Center, click Edit Widgets.
3. In your set of active widgets, do any of the following:
* Change the information a widget shows: Move the pointer over a widget. If Edit Widget appears below its name (indicating you can change the information), click the widget to flip it. Then change options or click highlighted information to change it. For example, in the List widget for Reminders, click the highlighted list to choose a different reminder list. When you’re finished, click Done in the widget.
* Change the size of a widget: Control-click a widget, then choose a different size.
4. When you’re finished customizing widgets, click Done at the bottom of the active widgets.

This comes from this resource: Add and customize widgets in Notification Center on Mac - Apple Support

If those are the steps you're taking, and the issue persists, booting into safe mode to test again will be helpful. When booting into safe mode, your system is checked for errors and login items are blocked from loading. It can be helpful when isolating this issue:

How to use safe mode

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Once in safe mode, check out this link for how to respond if the issue continues here or not: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Let us know how that goes.

Cheers!
