MacBook Air screen high contrast
My girlfriend's laptop all of a sudden turned on some bizarre high contrast mode and nothing she has tried has worked thus far. What more could she possibly do?

We understand that the screen on the Mac has switched to a high contrast mode. This sounds like an accessibility feature.
To help isolate the behavior, see if the Invert colors option is turned on in System Settings. Check out those steps here: Make it easier to see what’s on the screen of your Mac - Apple Support
Invert colors: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, click Display on the right, then turn on “Invert colors.” (You may need to scroll down.) If you enable color filters or turn on Night Shift, “Invert colors” is automatically disabled.
If unrelated to the accessibility features, then see if the issue is system-wide with the Mac by testing with a different macOS user account. See those steps here: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support
Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu> System Settings, then click Users & Groups
in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.
