How do I remove the keyboard/editing window at the bottom or my iPad?

I’m on iPadOS 16.3.1 and I cannot find any way to remove the window that floats at the bottom of any app that accepts text - e.g. email, Word, Notes, etc. I can minimize it but I want to get rid of it entirely. Note: I have tried turning off Shortcuts under General/Keyboard but this has not worked.

Here is a screenshot:

Thanks for helping!

OK, after more than an hour on three support calls with Apple, here’s the fix:

Go to Setting>General>Keyboard and turn off Shortcuts, Predictive, and Slide on Floating Keyboard to Type.

The first rep had me Reset the iPad - DO NOT DO THIS. I am now several hours into having to reset Touch ID, every app, wallpaper, wi-fi password, etc. etc. and I am only about 10% into reviewing the apps.

Hats off to Blake for quickly figuring out what the prior two advisors could not (I got disconnected in each case.) But Apple, really, you can do better on training advisors to only suggest a Reset after they’ve tried troubleshooting with other options.

Hi kgrass,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

From the screenshot provided, it looks like you want to turn off Siri Suggestions. You can disable this from Settings.

"Siri Suggestions are on by default for your apps. You can turn them off or change the settings at any time.

  1. Go to Settings  > Siri & Search, then select an app.
  2. Turn settings on or off."

Greetings kgrass,

To help isolate the behavior, see if the issue persists if a different keyboard is set up and used. Check out those steps here: Add or change keyboards on iPad - Apple Support

Here's how you can add a keyboard:

Add or remove a keyboard for another language
1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.
2. Tap Keyboards, then do any of the following:
• Add a keyboard: Tap Add New Keyboard, then choose a keyboard from the list. Repeat to add more keyboards.
• Remove a keyboard: Tap Edit, tap the Delete button next to the keyboard you want to remove, tap Delete, then tap Done.
• Reorder your keyboard list: Tap Edit, drag the Reorder button next to a keyboard to a new place in the list, then tap Done.

After the keyboard is added, take these steps to use it:

Switch to another keyboard
• On the onscreen keyboard: Touch and hold the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key, then tap the name of the keyboard you want to switch to.
You can also tap the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key to switch from one keyboard to another. Continue tapping to access other enabled keyboards.

Kind regards.
