when opening mail, the content is blank and takes a long time to open.

Hey myphonedo,
Does this happen when you check your emails from the direct website or only through the Mail app? If you haven't yet, give this step a try to help us further isolate the issue.
Additionally, let us know which email service provider you're having this issue with and if it happens with multiple email servers. You can also force quit your Mail app and reopen the app by holding the 'Shift' key on your keyboard: How to force an app to quit on your Mac
Holding the 'Shift' key while opening the Mail app will help clear the app state.
