How do I add a custom avatar?

I have reached level 3 and have tried to upload a custom avatar but, every time I select a picture, I get this:

Does the file need to be in a specific format? I have tried importing from Photos and Files with the same result. Can anyone help please?

Thank you all for your responses. My option became active overnight. As to editing the image, I found no option to scale or edit. It pretty much reproduces what you import, just taking the largest possible circular section from the middle of the image, so it's best to prepare a square original with that cropping in mind.

Were you offered the opportunity to edit/crop the image before posting?

For images in posts, the file must be 5MB or smaller. Don't know about avatars but 5MB is a good place to start

Formats: I use either jpg or png.

From your screenshot it appears you used this screen in Edit Profile and Preferences. Can you confirm:

Sometimes the forum software has a bad day. With that error msg, I would try again later.
