Is Airtag effective if hidden in metal, aluminum bike frame?

Thinking of getting a small rubber plug that hides an AirTag in the front fork of a mountain bike. so it's surrounded, except at bottom by metal. Some say effectiveness reduced by Faraday cage effect. Some others say, yes, but it's slight. Don't know much about Faraday cage and bluetooth.

Any thoughts, info out there? Thanks.

Bluetooth, which as you know the AirTags uses, operates in the same radio frequency range as Wi-Fi. It would be similar to you placing your home's wireless router inside a metal tube. This would significantly reduce the radio waves from transitioning through the metal ... effectively reducing Bluetooth's limited range even more.

A few other things to consider:

  • The AirTag's battery typically last about a year. Temperature extremes will shorten that time frame. Where you intend to place the AirTag may make it somewhat tedious to access to change the battery.
  • When the AirTag is separated from your (your iPhone actually), it will start beeping. If your goal is to use the AirTag as an anti-theft measure (which it is definitely not designed for), it will alert the thief ... and, if determined enough, they will try removing it ... including damaging your bike doing so.

Hello ArmandoWyo,

Thank you for your interesting message.

A little

We looked it up.

=Quote below=

“The Faraday effect is caused by left and right circularly polarized waves propagating at slightly different speeds, a property known as circular birefringence. Since a linear polarization can be decomposed into the superposition of two equal-amplitude circularly polarized components of opposite handedness and different phase, the effect of a relative phase shift, induced by the Faraday effect, is to rotate the orientation of a wave's linear polarization.”

=That said, =

Please look forward to the future information.

Thank you for your continued information.

actually I plan to disable the audible alarm. old men don't worry about stalkers.

The AirTag will also work for stolen objects. Why does Apple keep repeating almost by rote," which [AirTa] is definitely not designed for."

But thanks, you answered question on Faraday cage. The hiding place is actually easy to get to, simply pry out rubber plug. but limiting its range is counterproductive. Thanks.

Tesserax doesn't work for Apple. This is a user-to-user forum. And, they are correct. It's not what Apple designed the AirTag for. I think it's fair to point out that it's not optimized for that. But, neither Apple nor anyone in this forum is going to stop you from using it for that if it's what you want to do.

I am also not sure you can turn the sound off.
